How Atlas Ledger uses AI
Last Updated: October 8, 2026
Short version: a few optional features use Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. We send only what a feature needs for that one request. The AI can suggest changes, but it never makes them: you review and confirm everything yourself. You can turn AI off at any time.
1. Who provides the AI
AI features are powered by Anthropic's Claude, which we call through Anthropic's API under its commercial terms. Anthropic acts as our service provider for these features; it is listed with our other providers in our Privacy Policy.
2. Which features use AI, and what is sent
AI assistant (Pro)
When you send a message, we send Anthropic:
- your message and up to the 20 most recent messages of the current conversation;
- a financial snapshot: net worth, total assets and liabilities, this month's income, expenses and net savings, savings rate, and your top spending categories over the last 3 months (category names and amounts);
- today's date and the assistant's fixed instructions.
We do not send your name, email address, account numbers, or individual transactions, and we do not store the text of your AI conversations on our servers.
Receipt scanning (Plus and Pro)
The receipt image you upload is sent to read the merchant, date, total, and category. We do not store the image. Only the details you choose to save become part of your transactions.
If you use receipt forwarding, the receipt attachment (an image or PDF) of an email you forward is sent the same way, or, if the email has no attachment, the text of the email body. We do not store the email body or the attachment; we keep the sender address, subject line, attachment file name, and the extracted details so you can review the receipt in the app.
Weekly AI recap email (Plus and Pro, off unless you turn it on)
Once a week we send Anthropic a compact summary of last week in whole dollars: spending by category compared with the week before, month-to-date spending and your monthly budget for those categories, the number and total of bills expected in the next 7 days, your Safe to Spend amount, and notable changes. It contains no name, email address, account or merchant names, or individual transactions. Claude writes a short paragraph from those numbers; the tables and links in the email are produced by Atlas Ledger itself, not by the AI.
3. How long the data is kept
- At Anthropic: under Anthropic's standard API data retention, inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from Anthropic's backend within 30 days of receipt or generation, with limited exceptions (for example, where Anthropic must keep data to enforce its Usage Policy or comply with the law). See Anthropic's data retention article. We have not arranged zero data retention with Anthropic.
- Training: Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service state that Anthropic may not train models on customer content from its API services.
- At Atlas Ledger: we keep AI usage records (date, model, token counts, estimated cost) for 180 days to enforce usage limits. For the weekly recap we keep the numeric summary and delivery status for 180 days, so a week is never sent twice. We do not keep assistant conversations, receipt images, or forwarded receipt emails and attachments.
4. Propose, then confirm
The AI assistant can propose a small set of actions: creating or updating a budget, creating a savings goal, creating a categorization rule for future transactions, or deleting a budget. A proposal appears as a card showing exactly what would change, and nothing happens unless you tap Confirm. Unconfirmed proposals expire after 30 minutes. The AI cannot move money, link or unlink accounts, or change past transactions.
Suggestions in the weekly recap (such as "Create a Dining budget?") are links that open the app with a form filled in for you to review. Nothing is created until you save it.
5. AI can be wrong
AI output can contain mistakes. Please double-check amounts and dates, especially for scanned receipts, before relying on them. Atlas Ledger's AI is not financial, tax, legal, or investment advice.
6. How to turn AI off
- Everything: open Settings → Notifications & AI and switch off Use AI features. The assistant, receipt scanning, and the weekly recap stop for your account, and nothing more is sent to Anthropic. You can switch it back on at any time.
- Just the weekly recap: switch off Weekly AI recap email in Settings, or use the one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom of any recap email.
- The weekly recap is off unless you turn it on.
