How this calculator works
It finds the fixed monthly deposit that, added at the end of each month and earning the interest rate you entered (compounded monthly), grows what you already have to your goal by the month you chose. With no interest, it is simply the amount still needed divided by the number of months.
Tips for reaching a savings goal
- Set up an automatic transfer on payday so the money moves before you can spend it.
- Keep short-term goals (under a few years) in savings rather than investments, so the amount is there when you need it.
- Check in monthly. If you fall behind, either move the date or raise the monthly amount.
